Color Palettes in eLearning (with an example)

The use of color is a great way to engage your audience and portray a message that supports the content.

Color Theory is the study of how colors work together and how they affect our emotions and perceptions. Designers use color theory to convey the right mood for your message.

The 60 – 30 – 10 rule is a great way to choose a color palette and be consistent throughout the course. With this rule, you use a primary color 60% of the time, a secondary color 30% of the time; and an accent color 10% of the time.

If you are working within brand guidelines, choose colors that compliment the existing colors.

When you have creative freedom on an eLearning course, a good rule of thumb is to stick between two and three colors. I like to use different shades of each, if needed.
