Mobile-First Design

The evolving landscape of on-demand learning is gaining significance each year. This is why it’s more important to meet your audience where they are and according to their needs.

Here’s a few great statistics that support mobile learning:

  • In the United States, 67% of companies offer mobile learning as part of their training programs.
  • 47% of organizations that use mobile learning believe it’s advantageous and essential to their learning strategies.
  • 99% of mobile learners state that they’ve experienced success from mobile learning.

When thinking about mobile learning, it’s important to start with the question – what device will the target audience be using to complete this course?

I’ve been a part of companies where courses need to be completed on the clock, on certain devices. If this is the case, it’s best to design the course to fit the needs of the audience and the environment in which they are completing the course.

In some cases, we have the flexibility to develop a course that will be used in the flow of work. In this case, my client came to me requesting mobile-first delivery to support a franchise of individual business owners who aren’t confined to a desktop. They needed the flexibility to learn how to make their business better in between clients.

By keeping this in mind, I utilized a responsive authoring tool and consistently made design choices to support mobile-first delivery.

This included:

  • Developing videos in vertical format
  • Ensuring interactive elements were easily navigated on mobile devices
  • Creating activities that were accessible to revisit at a later time

One of the key components of mobile delivery is having a system to deliver the experiences. This may be through the use of a custom app, an LMS system that supports mobile apps, etc.
